Doing Business in Kelowna
High Technology

The future of the technology industry in the Okanagan looks bright.  The industry has successfully navigated through a difficult time following the “tech crash” of 2002/03 and has emerged smarter and more mature.  The region will see many benefits from UBC-Okanagan over the next few years, both in skill development and in research and development capacity.  The area’s population growth continues to provide additional local markets and a wider range of skilled workers and service providers to encourage in-migration and start-up activity.

The Okanagan Science and Technology Council completed the “Okanagan Technology Study” in March of 2005, as well as “The Present State of High Technology Business in the Okanagan Region” in January 2007. Both full reports can be found on their website but highlights include:

  • Annual increase in number of technology companies is approximately 5%
  • Annual employment growth in the industry is approximately 10.8%
  • Industry revenue is growing at a rate of 10% - 25% per year
  • More than 60% of companies export to US, and 50% have international clients
  • The average R&D budget for sample companies was $75,000 in 2004, and was expected to increase to $90,000 in 2005.

Additional information on the high technology industry can also be found in the “Technology Industry” section of our Economic Profile.
